Day 1 (Suggestion Only): Auckland to Rotorua 237 kms

Day 1 Arrive in Auckland and pick up your vehicle. Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city and is situated between two enormous harbours dotted with 48 extinct volcanic cones. As you drive down the southern motorway, suburban scenery gradually gives way to the farmland of South Auckland. The city of Hamilton is carved into two by the mighty Waikato River. Attractions include gardens, riverboat cruising and a giant free flight aviary. Excellent restaurants and cafes can be found at the southern end of the city’s main street. Next stop is Cambridge where you can shop for antiques and art, or simply enjoy the splendid parks and gardens. Arriving at Rotorua in the late afternoon and settle in at your accommodation.

Day 2 (Suggestion Only): Around Rotorua

Day 2 Rotorua sits squarely on the Pacific Ring of Fire, so volcanic activity is part of the city’s past and present. Explore the geothermal areas and discover the unique culture of New Zealand’s Maori people. Rotorua is entertaining in any weather, at any time of the year. Eleven beautiful lakes surround the geothermal town of Rotorua, which is great if you like to hike, bike, fish or kayak. Take a walk and discover the steaming, hissing and bubbling geothermal activity in this informal public park located right next to Rotorua's city centre.

Day 3 (Suggestion Only): Rotorua to Taupo 81 kms

Day 3 The road to Taupo will keep you entertained with its unusual, volcanic geography. You’ll also drive through large tracts of plantation pine forest. The resort town of Taupo sits on the edge of New Zealand’s largest lake, which is well stocked with sizeable trout. You’ll find everything a traveller could wish for, including an excellent choice of restaurants. Spend the rest of your day exploring the beautiful scenery and National Parks in this stunning region.

Day 4 (Suggestion Only): Taupo to Waitomo Caves 163 kms

Day 4 The cross-country route to Waitomo passes through farmland, lakeland and forest. Te Kuiti is the only major town on the way, so stock up on picnic supplies in preparation for the drive. The Waitomo Caves district is famous for its subterranean splendour. Beneath the surface of this limestone region is a series of vast cave systems decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and glow-worms. Some caves open to the public, and are easy to walk through, others require specialised caving equipment.

In the village of Maungaturoto you can explore antique and craft shops. At Brynderwyn you’ll turn towards Kaiwaka, a village known for its Dutch cheese. Wellsford, Helensville and Kaipara Harbour are all on the route towards Auckland. There are hot springs at Parakai if you have time to spare. At Kumeu you’ll turn towards Waitakere, where you’ll embark on a beatiful scenic drive through the Waitakere Ranges. Auckland will reveal itself as you drive down from Titirangi village.
